Common Bird's Foot Trefoil / Eggs and Bacon (Lotus corniculatus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Can have between 2 and 7 flowers, here with 5 (Greater has bertween 5 and 12 flowers, so if you see one with less than 5 it must be Common and not Greater!).

Common Bird's Foot Trefoil / Eggs and Bacon (Lotus corniculatus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). A larger specimen (they can grow up to 50cm high), Definitely not Greater nor var sativum as both of those always only have yellow flowers, not orange or pinkish as here. This may even be a hybrid as they do occur.
Common Bird's Foot Trefoil / Eggs and Bacon (Lotus corniculatus) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Greater BFT does have some orange stripes but they are shorter and fewer (without orange tones in between) unlike this Common BFT.

Greater BFT on the left and Common BFT on the right. Note the size difference and that Greater has more uniformly yellow flowers with no pink/orange bits. The Common BFT leaf size is larger here than one would expect - or the Greater one is smaller! There are more flowers in the Common one than I'd expect though.

Common Bird's Foot Trefoil / Eggs and Bacon (Lotus corniculatus) (10/07/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (fields). Classic seed pods - it's why it's called "Birds-Foot". Note the upper two calyx teeth curving inwards - classic ID feature for this species. Greater Birds-Foot has noticeably splaying out and quite hairy sepals.
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (14/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). This one had me confused at first as it is not classic for Common Bird's Foot but it can't be Greater Bird's Foot as that has a minimum of five flowers (and different leaves and sepals). I think this is actually var. sativus.
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (14/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Var Sativus has larger, uniformly yellow flowers compared with the wild variety.
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (24/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Annoyingly sown in my wildflower seed - you have to be careful with wildflower seeds as they often have cultivars in them, not the wild varieties (I didn't know this at the time and will be weeding the cultivats out).
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (24/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). And the sepals tend to be longer, greener than the wild variety, but nevertheless curving inwards like the wild variety (and relatively hairless).

Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (28/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). This is why I went down the route of Narrow Birdsfoot first of all, because of these long inward tapering calyx teeth, the description for which are "like a pair of earwig pincers". But they are not inward pointing enough for it to be that.
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (24/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). The leaves of var. sativus are larger than the wild variety and lack hairs (although still grey-ish green and rather fleshy).

Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (28/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Not sure what these are, they look like stipules but I'm not sure.
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (28/08/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Upper stem leaves are more elongated and pointed.
Agricultural Common Bird's Foot Trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. sativus) (21/06/2022) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank alongside drive). Not Greater BFT because of these sepals (not recurved and no acute angled notch, more of a rounded one). It's var. Sativus as this is pretty robust compared to var corniculatus (and I know I've sativus along the arena bank).
